Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss clinical applications and biomechanical considerations of TADs, CAs, and orthognathic surgery
  • Describe vertical correction with TAD, CAs, and orthognathic surgery
  • Discuss diagnosis and treatment planning, treatment implementation and management, and critical analysis and outcome assessments in challenging vertical cases

Temporary anchorage devices (TADs) offer a practical way to provide anchorage for various types of tooth movement. For instance, TADs and novel appliances can be used to treat challenging cases and control vertical dimensions. In this lecture, treatment outcomes will be discussed using pre- and post-treatment records plus cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Nowadays, clear aligners (CAs) are very popular. This presentation will explore how TADs, CAs, orthognathic surgery, and CBCT can be used to facilitate orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning, treatment simulation, and assessment of skeletal and dental changes.

The restoration of maxillary anterior teeth with a deep bite is one of the most challenging cases for a prosthodontist to treat. The orthodontist and prosthodontist must collaborate in an interdisciplinary manner to treat these situations using an occlusal and aesthetic analysis. In order to integrate these functional requirements with the aesthetic demands of the patient, the ortho-restorative treatment plan will frequently need to consider periodontal and orthognathic treatment options as well. This lecture will focus on the sequence of steps needed to coordinate orthodontic, periodontal and orthognathic treatments into the restorative plan when treating patients with a deep anterior bite.

In prosthodontics, the esthetic outcome of the final restoration is dependent on the interaction between hard and soft tissues and success is achieved when the final restoration satisfies both the periodontal and prosthodontic requirements. This presentation will review the interdisciplinary relationship of the restorative, orthodontic and periodontal aspects of treatment and how orthodontics plays a crucial role in establishing the ‘pink and white esthetics’ of an esthetic smile. A systematic approach to the diagnosis, treatment planning and management of these esthetically challenging cases will be presented with an emphasis on the role of orthodontics.

Learning Objectives:

  • State how chronic low back, neck & shoulder pain develop in ortho assistants and effective ergonomic interventions.
  • Assess the impact of different stool designs and adjustment on your spinal health.
  • Properly positioning patients to enable your most comfortable, upright working posture.
  • Optimally place delivery systems and instrument trays to prevent pain syndromes
  • Implement chairside stretching to minimize muscle imbalances
  • Manage low back pain with evidence-based exercises and therapies.

Orthodontic assistants face some of the greatest ergonomic and musculoskeletal challenges on the team.  Due to their unique positioning and job demands in the ortho bays, they report the highest prevalence of low back pain among all the specialities. This research-based seminar will provide assistants with powerful strategies that they can apply immediately in the operatory and at home to reduce work-related pain and prevent injury.
